TikTok is one of those companies, like Apple and Nintendo, that seem to just keep rising without any opposition. The popular short-form video-sharing platform has been causing other popular platforms to shake in their boots despite about a metric ton of controversies that arose over the years.
Now, TikTok laid off several of its employees
Several companies have been laying off their employees in recent months. We’ve seen layoffs from companies such as Netflix, Niantic, and T-Mobile. TikTok is the latest company to join the club, as stated by several sources (via Wired). The company eliminated several roles in America as of Monday, and we expect to see more. Employees in Europe were also informed that cutbacks were going to take place. Right now, it’s unclear just how many people were let go during this lay off. One staff member, however, reported that the company promised less than 100 people. That’s not too bad considering that the company has many thousands of employees company-wide.
So why did the company lay off its employees?
Right now, we’re waiting for some sort of official word from the company. Until then, we need to trust the inside baseball from people affected. TikTok told its employees that this move was part of a company-wide restructuring. That doesn’t really say much about what’s going on. One former staff member, David Ortiz, posted to his LinkedIn that he was laid off for this reason. We can’t confirm or deny that this is true at this point. Another former TikTok employee pointed to the restructuring being an effect of the global economy. Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, several companies world-wide are experiencing financial hardships. These companies are going to make hard decisions and sacrifices just to stay afloat. It turns out that there aren’t enough, let’s just say “nonsensical” dances in the world that can stave off the effects of an economic downturn. For the time being, it seems that the popular app’s losses are minimal comparatively speaking. However, we’re not sure if these layoffs are actually larger than we know. Also, there’s no way of telling if they will continue. We’ll just need to wait and see.
