The information comes courtesy of Chief Product Officer Chris Cox, who was speaking to fellow “Metamates” in an internal virtual meeting. Cox’s words became public courtesy of an anonymous Meta employee who reportedly heard the remark first hand. Company spokesperson Joe Osborne later confirmed the news, as per a report on The Verge. Reaching 300,000 monthly users since its broader availability in December is undoubtedly an encouraging sign for Meta. Horizon Worlds first launched in a closed beta, allowing creators to test out the virtual world-building capabilities of the platform. Osborne further said that the figure includes users of Horizon Worlds and Horizon Venues. The latter is a different app focusing on VR-based concerts or events. But the numbers don’t include users of Meta’s virtual conferencing service, Horizon Workrooms.
Meta is bringing Horizon Worlds to mobile devices later this year
The company also announced last week that creators have built more than 10,000 separate worlds on Horizon. Moreover, over 20,000 creators have joined its dedicated private Facebook group. Meta has been quiet about the sales figures of the Quest headset. But we know, based on CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s remarks, that the platform won’t be limited to the headset. “So while the deepest and most immersive experiences are going to be in virtual reality, you’re also going to be able to access the worlds from your Facebook or Instagram apps as well, and probably more over time,” Zuckerberg said during the company’s recent earnings call. The social media giant would also be keen to monetize Horizon Worlds in the future. Meanwhile, the aforementioned expansion of the platform to cover mobile devices could occur by the end of the year.
