Username is how people will find you on Instagram, it’s unique to you. It’s what will show up after they use the ‘@’ symbol to find/tag you. It’s also what’s added at the end of your Instagram URL, once again, it’s unique to you. So, if a username is taken, you cannot claim it, it has to be unique. So, be careful what you choose. Also, note that it needs to have less than 30 characters, and can only contain letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, without spaces or other symbols. Another thing to note is that you won’t be able to change your username back to the previous one for 14 days, if you decide to make the change. That being said, we’re here to talk about changing your username, not display name. You can do that via your smartphone or your PC, so we’ll show you both methods, starting with your phone.
How to change your Instagram username from your smartphone
The first thing you need to do is open the Instagram app, of course. Once you do that, tap on your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
Once our profile opens, you’ll see the ‘Edit profile’ button towards the top.
In the ‘Edit profile’ settings, there will be a ‘Username’ field, where your current username is located. Tap on it if you want to change it.
A new screen will open, and all focus will be on your username, while your keyboard will appear as well. Enter the new username, and if Instagram lets you know it’s not taken, tap the ‘check’ icon in the top-right corner.
There you go, you’ve changed your username from the Instagram app.
How to change your Instagram username from the web
If you’d like to change your username via your computer instead, it’s not a problem. Open Instagram.com, and log in. Once you’ve done that, click on your profile icon in the top-right corner.
Once the drop-down menu appears, click on ‘Settings’.
The ‘Edit Profile’ setting will open by default, containing your information, including your username. Delete the current username under the ‘Username’ field, and enter a new one.
Once you do that, and Instagram doesn’t tell you it’s taken, you can click on the ‘Submit’ icon at the bottom.
There you have it, you’ve chosen a new Instagram username from your PC.
