UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) is the UN refugee agency providing urgent supplies and aid to Ukrainians forced to flee the country due to the war. The UN estimates as many as five million people fleeing the war-torn country in the coming weeks and months. The UNHCR is on the ground in Ukraine and neighboring countries offering the support. The organization will provide shelter, basic needs, core relief items, and cash assistance to the needy. UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) is also working around the clock to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of children and their families affected by the war in Ukraine. Last but not least, the United Nations World Food Programme is providing the refugees with food and other essential supplies. You can click here to donate whatever amount you can to any of these organizations. Google will donate a matching amount to the same organization. This donation-matching campaign from the company is on top of its earlier commitment of “over $25 million in donations and in-kind support” for the humanitarian crisis in the war-torn country.
Google is also helping the war-affected people in other ways
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has created a humanitarian disaster. Several major organizations and companies have come forward to help support the relief efforts. Google has been actively extending its support as well. Apart from monetary and material aid, Google has also supported the relief efforts in Ukraine in several other ways. The company has launched an SOS alert on Search in the country. “When people search for refugee and evacuation information, they will see an alert pointing them to United Nations resources for refugees and asylum seekers,” Google said. It has also temporarily disabled some live Google Maps features to help protect the safety of people. Google has also temporarily waived international calling fees from Ukraine and from the US to Ukraine on Google Fi. People using Google Voice will not be charged any calling fees to Ukraine. Other efforts include free services through Google Cloud credits to eligible organizations and free protection against DDoS attacks on Ukrainian government websites and embassies worldwide.
