This information comes shortly after Google started rolling out a new design for its Gmail web client. It seems like this feature has already started popping up for some.
Gmail may be able to pause notification while desktop client is in use
9to5Google reports that in one email account, Gmail displayed this new option, an option to pause mobile notification while the desktop client is active. It only appeared in one (test) account, and Google didn’t mention it yet, not at all. It may be just in a testing phase now. The feature appeared on a Workspace account, in case you’re wondering. If you take a look at the image below, you’ll see the option that appeared. It clearly explains this feature. It’s simple, and yet it may be quite useful for some people. Why would you get Gmail notifications on your smartphone, if you’re already using Gmail on desktop? Many people would be happy to have this feature, me included.
There is no switch for this feature in Gmail’s settings
What’s interesting is that there is no option in Gmail’s settings menu to enable this feature, or to turn it off once activated. That’s yet another hint that this feature is in testing, which does not guarantee it will become available. The source does note that the feature can be revoked in Chrome’s settings. Gmail uses the “Your device use” permission in order to bring this feature to life, so… you can tackle that in Settings -> Security and Privacy -> Site Settings -> Additional Permissions. Now, earlier in the article, we mentioned a redesign of Gmail for desktop. Google decided to change things around visually, though most of the options are still in the same place. Google didn’t really move things around all that much. So, even with the redesign, Gmail on the web will look familiar.
