The first-gen UDC solution from Samsung had quite a few shortcomings. For one, the camera wasn’t properly hidden beneath the display. It was visible without much effort, thanks to a lower pixel density directly above the sensor. The company has seemingly addressed that issue this year. Twitter user @SamsungRydah, who has a decent record with Samsung leaks, recently published a slide that shows that the under-display camera will be a lot less visible on the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The leaked slide, which appears to be from official material, reveals that the Korean firm is switching to a new type of UDC panel this year. The display directly above the camera will employ “Scatter” pixel tech rather than “Collective” pixels on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. This allows for a 40 percent higher pixel density, up from 94 PPI to 132 PPI (pixels per inch). A higher pixel density means the Galaxy Z Fold 4 screen will look more uniform above the camera. As such, any image or text in that area of the display would appear less pixelated. However, with pixels now denser, they may block more light. This would affect the image quality (not that it was any good on the Galaxy Z Fold 3). Hopefully, Samsung has worked on it and its second-gen UDC tech would have something to write home about. The first-gen solution was pretty much a gimmick.
The Galaxy Z Fold 4 brings improvements in numerous other ways
Along with the under-display camera, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will also bring improvements to the rear cameras. Reports suggest the phone will feature a 50-megapixel primary camera at the back, flanked by a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens and a 10-megapixel 3X optical zoom camera. We are also expecting software optimizations for better photo and video quality. Elsewhere, the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will feature an improved design and a more durable build. Samsung is also expected to offer a more optimized software experience tailored to the foldable form factor. The new foldable arrives on August 10, along with the Galaxy Z Flip 4, Galaxy Watch 5 series, and the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro.
