The August SMR (Security Maintenance Release) for the Galaxy S21 FE in the US is rolling out with firmware versions G990USQU3CVG1 and G990U1UEU3CVG2 for the carrier-locked and unlocked units, respectively. The OTA (over the air) package is already available on most networks. The remaining few should also join the party soon. The Galaxy S21 FE is also picking up the August SMR in Europe, Asia, Australia, Latin America, and other regions. Depending on the market, the update bears the firmware versions G990BXXU2CVG7 and G990EXXU3CVG7. Samsung’s changelog for the new software package mentions some GPS-related improvements. This should make for better location tracking. The device is also gaining system performance optimizations. But on top of it all, this update brings dozens of vulnerability fixes that are part of the August SMR for Samsung Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The company has already revealed that the latest release patches over 30 Android OS issues. These include one critical vulnerability that allowed remote code execution over Bluetooth. Additionally, Samsung fixed over 30 Galaxy-specific issues as well. Many of those flaws were labeled critical by the company. Affected device components include Knox VPN, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, Samsung DeX, Smart View, and App Lock.
Samsung rolls out the August security update to the Galaxy S21 FE
All of these vulnerability fixes are now rolling out to the Galaxy S21 FE globally. If you’re using the newest Fan Edition (FE) phone from Samsung, you should be getting the August security update in the coming days. Watch out for a notification prompting you to download the OTA update. You can also manually check for updates from the Settings app on your phone. Simply go to the Software update menu and tap on Download and install. If you don’t see any pending OTA updates, check again a few days later. The Galaxy S21 FE will also receive the Android 13 update later his year. The big update will introduce Samsung’s One UI 5.0 custom software. The rollout may begin sometime in December, or at least early next year. The Korean firm has significantly improved its software game, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the update comes early.
