The game is also going to be coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. What’s more, is that the game will be not only free-to-play, but it’ll also feature cross-platform play. The game will have cross-progression too. So, should you be so inclined, you could choose to play the game on any platform you wish and take your progress with you.
Skate will be free on all platforms and support cross-play with mobile
The confirmation of a mobile release for the upcoming Skate (which is just titled ‘Skate.‘) comes from Dan McCulloch, the General Manager of Full Circle, which is the studio behind Skate’s development. McCulloch offered up the details about mobile development during a recent discussion video with fellow dev team members Cuz Parry and Isabelle Mocquard. The trio mention that the decision to take the game free-to-play considered a lot of factors. But what it came down to was that the team wants as many people as possible to be able to experience and enjoy the game. Which meant not charging to play it and making it available to play on just about every platform. It’s expressly mentioned that mobile development is pretty early on. And that the team is still working on getting the controls just right. Among other things. So that sounds like it may not launch at the same time as the other platforms.
There will be micro transactions, but there will be no paywalls
The elephant in the room with any free-to-play game these days is how things will be monetized. McCulloch does confirm that micro transactions will be included. That being said, he also states that there will be no paywalls and that the game won’t be pay to win. No parts of the city (it takes place in San Vansterdam) will be blocked off by payment. If all this holds true, then mtx may end up being limited to DLC like content packs and aesthetics. Either way, the goal for the team at Full Circle is to support this game “for years to come.” As Parry puts it, “There won’t be a Skate 5 through 10. It’s not Skate 4, it’s just Skate.”
